The number of women starting out in science has been growing since the late 1990s, but women aren't as likely to stay in the profession as male scientists. Researchers looked at about 6 million scientists worldwide who have had at least three studies published from 1996 to 2018, noting a steady rise in the number of women researchers, but when they looked at publication records over that time period, an indicator of continuing in the career, they saw a decline in the number of women publishing papers.
